Thoughts About the Leap Day Activities. . .

On Wednesday, February 29, 2012 we celebrated Leap Day. Whenever we think of 'leap' we think of Frogs. Frogs eat insects or bugs.
In Mrs. Powell's class we had something to eat. We could choose if we wanted to eat gummy worms or chocolate covered bugs. The chocolate covered bugs were really real!!
After we ate the gummy worms or the chocolate bugs, we made an origami frog. It leaped like a frog, too.
Mrs. Powell's class enjoyed celebrating Leap Day. It was fun! Happy Leap Day!

On Leap Day in Mrs. Powell's class, we had a lot of fun!
First we had a snack. There were chocolate covered bugs - real bugs! There were crickets and worms; they were really good! There were also gummy worms for people who didn't want to eat real bugs.
Then we made origami frogs. They're a lot of directions - but it was fun, too!
Leap Day was really fun. I hope next Leap Day is as fun as this one was!
Fourth Grade Students:
Sierra says:
Mrs. Powell's Leap Day Celebration was loads of fun. We got to do many fun activities that were educational at the same time. Mrs. Powell was very thoughtful and thought the class would like a snack. As you know, frogs leap. So, she picked snacks that she thought frogs would eat. She picked gummy worms. And actual bugs! Like crickets and worms, real crickets and worms covered in chocolate! I didn't eat any; it was way too gross. We even tried to get some staff members and teachers to try. Mr. Hayes tried them and he liked it. Everybody who ate real bugs got a certificate. Then, we did some research on World Book Online about Leap Day. We learned why Leap Day was Leap Day, and some things about frogs. Also, some countries where bugs are part of their diet. And last, but not least, we did a Venn Diagram with three circles. We were comparing frogs.
Colby says:
Yesterday was Leap Day! Leap Day comes once in every 4 years. On Leap Day we celebrated by having a scavenger hunt on the computer about frogs and what countries eat insects. Next we did a 3-circle-Venn Diagram on 3 different frogs. After that we had refreshments - chocolate covered insects. Yum! I ate the cricket - it tasted like mint chocolate popcorn. After that I got some water to get the parts of crickets out of my teeth. Yuck! Leap Day was really fun. At the end, we got to make an origami frog. It was really FUN!

Yesterday we had a small Leap Year Party for Leap Year. We got to do a website scavenger hunt on frogs and on other countries that eat bugs as a part of their everyday diet. We also got to do a Triple Venn Diagram comparing 3 different frogs. And last, but DEFINITELY NOT least... MRS. POWELL ORDERED CHOCOLATE COVERED REAL DEAD BUGS!!! Many people in my class tried a bug, but I didn't; I had a candy gummy worm instead. But now that I know how people reacted to it, I would try one now...but it will still be gross!

Yesterday was February 29th - Leap Day! The day before, Mrs. Powell had a box and she told us it was for Leap Day and that we had to guess what was inside it. Then yesterday we opened the box, and it was full of chocolate covered bugs -just like frogs eat (minus the chocolate)!! A few of us were brave enough to try them, and even Mrs. Powell ate one. I got a white chocolate centipede. We all had to agree that they tasted like Kit-Kats, because the bugs had no taste, but were crunchy, so we could only taste the chocolate. The rest of the day was filled with crafts and activities, and origami frogs.
